Jennifer Shook

Jen Shook is a University of Iowa PhD candidate in English and Graduate Certificate student in book history and book arts at the Center for the Book, as well as Co-Director of Imagining America’s PAGE (Publicly Active Graduate Engagement) Fellow Program, and social media correspondent for The Digital Studio for Public Arts and Humanities. Originally from Oklahoma, she holds interdisciplinary degrees from Swarthmore College and the University of Chicago, and has taught at DePaul University, Columbia College, and the Newberry Library, among other places. She toured the Midwest as a Road Scholar talking about Lincoln in popular culture for the Illinois Humanities Council and worked as a dramaturg, director, and theatre producer in Chicago, where she founded Caffeine Theatre—a company that mined the poetic tradition to explore social questions (2002-2012). Her current work employs memorial and commemoration as a lens to explore the relationships between early U.S. performance/representation and contemporary Native American drama. She has also recently dressed as the City of Literature for the Iowa City Carnaval, hosted a symposium on “Life After: Activist Memorials and Digital Collaboration,” and co-designed a number of very small shadow puppets.
